    Screening and conductance relaxations in insulating granular aluminium thin films

    We have recently found in insulating granular Al thin film a new experimental feature (Delahaye et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 186602, 2011), namely the existence of a conductance relaxation that is not sensitive to gate voltage changes. This conductance relaxation is related to the existence of a metallic-like screening in the film and can be used to estimate its characteristic length scale.     Conserved Central Intraviral Protein Interactome of the Herpesviridae Family

    Protein interactions are major driving forces behind the functional phenotypes of biological processes. As such, evolutionary footprints are reflected in system-level collections of protein-protein interactions (PPIs), i.e., protein interactomes. We conducted a comparative analysis of intraviral protein interactomes for representative species of each of the three subfamilies of herpesviruses (herpes simplex virus 1, human cytomegalovirus, and Epstein-Barr virus), which are highly prevalent etiologic agents of important human diseases. The intraviral interactomes were reconstructed by combining experimentally supported and computationally predicted protein-protein interactions. Using cross-species network comparison, we then identified family-wise conserved interactions and protein complexes, which we defined as a herpesviral “central” intraviral protein interactome. A large number of widely accepted conserved herpesviral protein complexes are present in this central intraviral interactome, encouragingly supporting the biological coherence of our results. Importantly, these protein complexes represent most, if not all, of the essential steps required during a productive life cycle. Hence the central intraviral protein interactome could plausibly represent a minimal infectious interactome of the herpesvirus family across a variety of hosts. Our data, which have been integrated into our herpesvirus interactomics database, HVint2.0, could assist in creating comprehensive system-level computational models of this viral lineage

    Recent developments in the measurement of precision electroweak measurements are summarised, notably new results on the mass of the top quark and mass and width of the W boson. Predictions of the Standard Model are compared to the experimental results which are used to constrain the input parameters of the Standard Model, in particular the mass of the Higgs boson. The agreement between measurements and expectations from theory is discussed.     Defect healing at room temperature in pentacene thin films and improved transistor performance

    We report on a healing of defects at room temperature in the organic semiconductor pentacene. This peculiar effect is a direct consequence of the weak intermolecular interaction which is characteristic of organic semiconductors. Pentacene thin-film transistors were fabricated and characterized by in situ gated four-terminal measurements. Under high vacuum conditions (base pressure of order 10E-8 mbar), the device performance is found to improve with time. The effective field-effect mobility increases by as much as a factor of two and mobilities up to 0.45 cm2/Vs were achieved. In addition, the contact resistance decreases by more than an order of magnitude and there is a significant reduction in current hysteresis. Oxygen/nitrogen exposure and annealing experiments show the improvement of the electronic parameters to be driven by a thermally promoted process and not by chemical doping. In order to extract the spectral density of trap states from the transistor characteristics, we have implemented a powerful scheme which allows for a calculation of the trap densities with high accuracy in a straightforward fashion. We show the performance improvement to be due to a reduction in the density of shallow traps <0.15 eV from the valence band edge, while the energetically deeper traps are essentially unaffected. This work contributes to an understanding of the shallow traps in organic semiconductors and identifies structural point defects within the grains of the polycrystalline thin films as a major cause.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, to be published in Phys.     Audit of healthcare provision for UK prisoners with suspected epilepsy

    SummaryPurposeTo describe the prevalence and nature of epileptic seizure disorders in a typical UK prison and compare the care offered to prisoners to the recommendations of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).MethodsOver a 14-month period, all prisoners identified as having epilepsy were registered by prison primary healthcare services at a category ‘C’ prison holding 640 male adults. Prison and National Health Service health records were reviewed, prisoners were re-assessed by members of a specialist secondary care service based in the local general hospital NHS.ResultsTwenty-six prisoners were thought to have epilepsy. 61.5% of diagnoses had not been made by epilepsy specialists, 73.1% had uncontrolled seizures, only 19.2% had had computed tomography, none magnetic resonance imaging. At review, 30.8% of prisoners were thought to require neuroimaging, 19.2% cardiac investigations. The diagnosis of epilepsy was confirmed in only 57.9% of those prisoners considered to have the condition by prison healthcare services. 53.8% of those prisoners confirmed as having epilepsy had not had a medical review in the past 12 months; 63.2% required a change in their antiepileptic drugs (AEDs).ConclusionAlthough the prevalence of epilepsy in this prison population appeared high at first sight, a critical review of the diagnoses reduced the difference to the prevalence of epilepsy in the population at large. Fewer prisoners than expected achieved seizure control. Collaboration with specialist epilepsy services was poor. There were significant discrepancies between the healthcare provision in prison and the NICE epilepsy guidelines
